Forest Hills Gardens, one of the most charming and prestigious communites in NYC, was originally a large farm purchased by the Cord Meyer Development Company and developed by the Russell Sage Foundation. It is perhaps best know for the West Side Tennis Club, which was the home of the U.S. Open until the late 1970s and which has recently been revived with a series of popular music concerts.
Forest Hills Gardens was planned by Frederick Law Olmstead, Jr., who modeled the "Garden" community on English towns. The homes were designed by Grosvenor Atterbury, and quite a few were influenced by Gustav Stickley, who made famous the "Arts and Crafts" architectural movement.
Although most houses in Forest Hills Gardens are owner-occupied, we list some of the loveliest private homes available for rent.
